Flea & Anthony
Hollywood Ca.
1985
I returned home one afternoon to find Flea in my basement jamming with a friend. It knocked my socks off and i immediately recruited him to play bass on a couple of songs i was about to record. Some studio/sound engineer guys i knew used to go on about "show me a punk that can actually play" ...So i showed them Flea! This was the period just prior to the Peppers debut ; Flea was playing bass with the fierce LA punk band, Fear. But from the moment the Chili Peppers hit the stage the excitement was undeniable; they were exuberant and contageous and the venues were mobbed every time they played. They were signed shortly thereafter. But it wasn't these guys! They'd been having such a blast, they hadn't expected immediate label attention and when the offers came, half the band, Hillel and Jack had a previous comittement and had to be replaced (only to return and regroup later, unfortunately, for too short a time.) It was the new line up with a record deal, that went out back to the alley that night, behind the rehearsal space they were using, to shoot these pictures. It does seem somewhat prophetic now, that my photo pick off that roll of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, was of only the two members, Flea and Anthony.
